Invoice finance for engineering businesses

Engineering businesses can complete valuable work while payment remains weeks away. Explore funding against eligible component, fabrication or engineering-service invoices to help replenish working capital.

Positive Funding Limited is a finance broker. Funding is subject to provider assessment and agreed terms.

The cash gap changes at each production stage

Design, machining and specialist labour may consume cash well before a job becomes invoiceable. Once components or services are accepted, another wait can begin while the customer follows its payment terms.

Invoice finance targets that receivable stage. Keep it distinct from money needed for equipment, work in progress or a project that has not yet reached an accepted billing milestone.

Show customer acceptance

Inspection records and delivery evidence can help establish an undisputed debt.

Separate unfinished work

Do not count work in progress as funding availability before the provider accepts a receivable.

Review larger customers

Check limits where one OEM or principal contractor dominates the debtor book.

From engineering completion to cash release

Support the invoice

Provide the purchase order, delivery details and relevant acceptance record. For staged services, explain the milestone and any outstanding conditions.

Confirm the eligible value

The provider considers customer limits and contractual deductions before calculating the agreed advance.

Reconcile payment and adjustments

When the customer pays, receipts reduce the funded balance. Fees, credits and other agreed deductions determine the remaining settlement.

Quality obligations can affect payment

A delivered component may still be subject to inspection, rejection or rework. Explain how those rights operate and whether a customer can offset claims against other invoices. The clearer the link between accepted output and payment entitlement, the easier it is to assess the receivable.

Finance around your accounts capability

Invoice factoring

Factoring combines advances with help following up customer debts. Agree how technical disputes are escalated to your engineering team.

Invoice discounting

Discounting may suit a firm with reliable credit control and job-to-ledger reconciliation. Your staff continue managing collections.

Selective invoice finance

For a sizeable completed project, ask whether a single approved account can be assessed. Selective funding will still depend on the underlying debt and provider terms.

Compare factoring and invoice discounting before choosing who manages collections.

Illustration: an accepted component delivery

A £70,000 eligible invoice with an assumed 80% advance produces £56,000 initially. The £14,000 balance is before charges. If £10,000 of the bill is disputed, funding cannot be assumed on the full face value.

This is a worked example, not an advertised advance rate.

Include delay and rework in the forecast

Compare a normal collection cycle with a slower one when requesting pricing. Ask about service fees, daily funding charges, minimums and additional review costs. Check that the margin on funded jobs can absorb the overall charge. Read our guide to facility costs.

Prepare a receivables-led discussion

Bring the aged ledger, sample orders and acceptance records, recent accounts and details of existing borrowing. Explain customer concentration, disputed work and the split between completed sales and work in progress. Include a forecast of the cash gap you want to cover.

Engineering invoice finance questions

Can a milestone invoice qualify?

It may if the contractual milestone has been met and the debt is acceptable to the provider. Approval conditions and rights to withhold payment require review.

Does the facility finance unfinished components?

Ordinary receivables funding is not automatically available against work in progress. Discuss that requirement separately from invoices for accepted deliveries.

What if the customer requests rework?

Explain whether payment is disputed or suspended. The provider may restrict the relevant amount until the position is resolved.

Can overseas engineering buyers be considered?

Some providers accept export debts. Country coverage, currency, contract terms and buyer approval all need checking.
