Invoice finance for manufacturing businesses

Manufacturing invoice finance may turn approved sales invoices into cash before trade customers settle. Use the discussion to assess how completed deliveries could support wages, suppliers and the next production cycle.

Positive Funding Limited is a finance broker. Funding is subject to provider assessment and agreed terms.

Understand where cash is tied up in production

Money moves from raw materials into work in progress, finished goods and finally a customer debt. Each stage has a different funding requirement. Invoice finance generally addresses the last stage, when an acceptable receivable exists.

That distinction helps avoid promising production capacity on cash that cannot yet be drawn. Forecast the whole cycle, including what must be paid before the next eligible invoice is raised.

Recycle completed sales

Assess how advances on accepted deliveries could replenish cash already spent on production.

Keep acceptance evidence

Orders, dispatch records and customer sign-off help support the invoice value.

Check buyer concentration

A large order from one customer can consume its agreed funding limit.

From delivered goods to available funds

Confirm the receivable

Provide the invoice and evidence that the goods were supplied under agreed terms. Identify any outstanding inspection or acceptance condition.

Establish the advance

The provider calculates availability from approved debts and limits. Orders not yet delivered do not automatically increase what you can draw.

Reconcile the final payment

Customer receipts reduce the funded balance. Returns, credits and charges are reconciled before the residual amount is released.

Production quality and trading terms affect the debt

Explain warranty claims, batch rejection, sale-or-return terms and any customer right to set off amounts. A provider needs to understand what could reduce the receivable after dispatch. Keep disputed items separate from accepted sales so the funding picture stays clear.

Choose funding around your accounts team

Invoice factoring

Factoring can add sales-ledger and collection support when production management has little time for chasing accounts. Agree how quality queries reach the right person.

Invoice discounting

Discounting may fit a manufacturer with established debtor controls. You retain collections and must supply reliable information about sales, credits and receipts.

Selective invoice finance

A large completed order may justify asking about selected-invoice funding. Compare its cost and limits with a facility supporting the wider customer ledger.

Compare factoring and invoice discounting before choosing who manages collections.

Illustration: funding accepted deliveries

If £84,000 of invoices qualifies at an assumed 80%, the initial calculation is £67,200. The £16,800 difference remains before charges. A disputed batch or customer limit could reduce the amount available.

This is an example of the calculation, not a promised percentage or quote.

Look at cost across the production cycle

Request pricing based on realistic debtor days and expected use, including seasonal peaks. Compare service fees, the cost of funds outstanding and minimum charges during lower-output months. Check affordability against your gross margin. Our cost guide explains the distinctions.

Show the link between sales and cash

Prepare debtor ageing, customer terms, dispatch evidence and recent management figures. Explain export sales, returns, concentrated accounts and existing security. Include a production cash forecast so the funding discussion distinguishes receivables from stock and equipment needs.

Manufacturing funding questions

Does an order book create invoice funding?

Not by itself. The provider normally needs an eligible debt arising from supply. Confirm when your particular sales become acceptable receivables.

Can overseas deliveries qualify?

They may under suitable export arrangements. Buyer, country, currency and contract conditions need approval.

What happens after a batch is rejected?

Report the dispute and update any credits. The affected invoice may lose eligibility, which can reduce funding or require an adjustment to advances.

Is machinery finance the same facility?

No. Invoice funding is linked to receivables. The purchase or refinancing of machinery should be considered as a separate requirement.
