The verified benchmark: 34,000 businesses at the end of 2024
The January 2025 UK Finance Standards Framework, page 5, states that 34,000 UK businesses were supported by invoice finance and asset-based lending at the end of 2024.
That is a historical combined figure. It should not be labelled a verified 2026 total or narrowed to invoice finance alone. Source checked on 8 November 2026.
Read the scope before repeating the number
The publication groups invoice finance with wider asset-based lending. The latter can involve assets beyond customer receivables. The count also describes businesses, which is not necessarily the same population as incorporated companies.
It does not measure how many invoices were financed or how many new facilities began during that year. Those questions require different data.
What arrangements might a business be comparing?
Factoring normally adds collection support to the advance. Discounting generally leaves collection work with the business. A wider asset-based facility may address additional assets and funding needs.
The combined industry count cannot tell an individual company which option to choose. Use the comparison guide to examine the practical responsibilities.
Why a profitable sale can still create a cash gap
Consider the dates rather than the market size. A staffing agency may pay workers before its client settles. A manufacturer may have another production run to fund while delivered goods remain unpaid. A haulier may need fuel for the next journey before the last freight bill clears.
These are illustrations of payment timing, not claims about which sector has the most invoice finance users.
Use your ledger to judge suitability
Ask what would be available against today’s eligible invoices after limits, reserves and exclusions. Compare that cash with the commitments falling due. Then examine collection responsibilities, non-payment risk and the full cost.
A facility is useful only if its terms and timing work for the business. Widespread use elsewhere cannot establish your eligibility or make an unsuitable arrangement affordable.
Explore the question behind your enquiry
Tell Positive Funding whether the priority is payroll, suppliers or a growing debtor balance. We can discuss the invoices and payment dates involved, rather than treating an industry statistic as a reason to borrow.
